RECORDS: CHECK IN

Please leave a brief comment telling a bit about yourself and, in a sentence or two, your general view on environmental issues and their relationship to social justice. This is especially for members of the Unitarian-Universalist Church of Charlotte’s Environmental Justice Study Group, but we welcome others to leave a comment here, from the congregation or from the wider community.

    Hello, all,

I’m Don Boekelheide, focus group member. I work at the Urban Ministry Center directing a community gardening program for the homeless, teach organic gardening at CPCC, and write and keep a test garden for Organic Gardening Magazine.

In a nutshell, I feel that a healthy environment is the necessary foundation for everything else we do. It is where, as Pogo said, “We have met the enemy, and he is us.”

I look forward to our discussion.

    Hey Don

A good looking “site”. Love your art work!

I look forward to a discussion on Sunday of your 3 suggested purposes for out Study Group’s proposed program. I think they can be linked in logic and in time….

Check out the web site at http://www.freerice.org when you’re able. Cool!

I am a visual artist. I paint abstact paintings on canvass and paper. They have a lot of texture and very bright colors.

I have been working in invironment since the mid 40’s when the Corp of Engineers wanted to streighten out our mountain streams to keep them from flooding. (They did not win.)

Thank you Don, for all your good work!

Hi! I’m a Charlotte native and concerned citizen. As part of the focus group, I am excited to be a key contributor to such a worthwhile effort. I try to take a form and substance approach to my lifestyle, thereby minimizing my carbon footprint.

A couple of congregations are following the star of Lester Brown as per his Plan B and Plan B 2.0. The brief recap of the 2.0 book may be interesting to some of us—it can be found at the Earth Policy Institute’s site:

Plan B 2.0: Rescuing a Planet Under Stress and a Civilization in Trouble, Lester Brown, the Earth Policy Institute (www.epi.org)

Can you load this into the Reading section of our group’s blog?

Any feedback on yesterday’s e-mail to you?

    Roger
