#7 – Imagine the Possibilities: Green Sanctuary at UUCC

[Note: I think this slide needs to be different from what’s in Kym’s PPT now. I don’t think we abandoned the idea of presenting our best “imagine the possibilities” projects for our own church.]

A: Speaking: I think we say something like, “How might the successes that other UU churches have achieved as Green Sanctuaries be realized at our church? What kind of focused, meaningful projects might engage the imaginations, energy and passion of our membership?” Then highlight at least 3-4 of these — again, 30-second previews of mini-case studies. (Organic/local produce fair, Low Carbon Diet idea, Stream Clean, 10-Tree Challenge, Rain Garden, etc.?) Need to note at some point that GS certification calls for a specified number of projects in various areas of enviro. engagement, but not go into great detail.

    B: Visual/Other: TBD

It may be most effective if we could agree on several initiatives that covered at least 4 bases

    * Collectively ~cover our 4 media (e.g., air)
    * Illustrative some “leverage” logic (from
    individual/family thru congregation thru…)**
    * Demonstrate involvement of a wide intergen
    swath of the church’s membership
    * Capitalize on special UUCC capabilities and
    interests

** 1) families assess their carbon footprint
    (several assessment tools on web)
    2) make commitment to reduce footprint by
    selected amount by choosing strategy(ies)
    from UUCC-provided template
    3) as example, if tree planting is selected,
    family joins 10-tree challenge, collaborates
with others to select site and plant (other
strategies would point to practical energy
    efficiencies, for instance)
    4) whetted appetite for trees can lead to work
with Chlt Tree Commission, Sierra Club,
    etc

Roger, agreed. The persuasiveness of our argument is based largely on our ability to show that we CAN engage at all of these levels, and to provide examples of HOW. (If we end up using the tree diagram to conceptualize the levels of engagement earlier on in the presentation, then in this block/slide, we APPLY that concept via our best “imagine the possibilities” proposed projects. I agree that covering our 4 “media” makes sense; we need to keep this thing cohesive and integrated, and one way to do that is to follow up on the specific visual, model or context we introduced earlier in the presentation. (A rule of thumb in dramatic theatre is if you show the audience a gun in Act 1, you better use it by Act 3.)
