#2 – Define the Environment as a Social Justice Issue

A: Speaking: Make the case for the environment as a social justice issue; introduce the idea of personal transformation, focusing on the causes, not just the symptoms

B: Visual/Other: Something along the lines of my Choices/Consequences visual, the intersection of environmental and social injustices — really the “big picture” of the umbrella topic.

I revised the “Causes and Consequences” slide that I had suggested earlier. I thought the “Why” bullets needed to acknowledge that, while individual choices and attitudes are primary reasons for environmental injustices, there are also systemic obstacles caused by entrenched, ingrained social and cultural patterns.

I also deleted the word “greed” because I think that’s already reflected in the term “Self-interest vs. greater good”

    My suggested bullets:

    Lack of awareness/will to change
    - Self interest vs. greater good
    - Convenience, apathy
    - Flawed or missing spiritual connection to the natural world
    - Entrenched, ingrained systems = inertia, obstacles to action

    I’m a little confused – I can’t find the “slide” anywhere, so I don’t know what’s being changed?

On the second note, Pete, the points are valid, god knows!, but it seems pretty intense and blaming. We’ll get there, but on a presentation about env. justice do we want to lead with this? I think an alternative is to let the quotes and factoids speak for themselves, and be as positive as possible in our presentation?
