First draft energy outline, 20 Jan 2008
by Ed Stokes, UUCC Environmental Protection study group
See figures at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_energy_resources_and_consumption
The problem:
- USA uses more energy per capita than other industrialized nations (except Canada)
- Planning is done based on supply and demand, as if limited resources were infinite (reference ?)
Why is this a “social justice” issue?
Globally:
- USA uses more than our share, leaving less for underdeveloped nations.
- Wasting petrochemicals on low efficiency lighting, low efficiency heating & appliances, poor insulation raises utility bills.
- Burning oil and coal fouls the water, air, and land (e.g. Cliffside coal plant)
- Burning petrochemicals to drive personal vehicles means less walking and bicycling, contributing to obesity epidemic
What can we do?
- Establish the church physical plant as an example for the community (invest in high efficiency lighting, solar panels, insulation – become a UU “Green Sanctuary”?)
- Calculate carbon footprint of the church and its members, establish a goal to reduce by a certain amount (30% ?)
- Invite other churches to respond likewise (Mecklenburg Ministries ?)
- Battery recycling (reduce mercury)
- Cycling activities – advocacy – fundraising? – Bikes for kids

I completely agree with keeping a global perspective on this.
